Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a compassion based way of approaching the internal dialogue we all experience. This can include breathing and relaxation to alleviate stress and tension. Somatic techniques help connect the mind and the body and how past events and current emotions are held in our bodies. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a research based technique for helping people heal from the effects of trauma.ĭialectal Behavioral Therapy is a research-based modality that helps cultivate tools for emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness. Mindfulness is the practice of "noticing without judgment." As we grow in our ability to be mindful, we are better able to regulate our emotions and reactions. Everyone deserves to be the fullest version of themselves, and it is my privilege to walk alongside those trying to get there. I want to help those who feel stuck, those for whom maybe counseling hasn't worked before, those who perhaps feel hopeless - to feel heard, seen, understood, cared for, and perhaps, a little less stuck. In private practice, I have found a joy for working with students, people recovering from acute and complex trauma, and anyone going through a life transition. I have additional training in trauma-focused therapy, DBT, and EMDR.Īfter several years of working in residential centers, I transitioned to private practice. I began my career as a therapist working in residential treatment centers. There I worked with clients with a broad range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. From there, I went on to graduate from the University of Florida with my master’s and specialist’s degrees in Mental Health Counseling. For us, preparing for New Year’s happens all year long.I decided to pursue a career in counseling after 5 years of teaching in the classroom from 6th to 12th grade. For the past three years we have expanded and renovated with more equipment, functionality and parking to prevent bottlenecks during busy times. We launch new programs, classes, GHF gear and smoothies to create excitement. ![]() We teach our newbies about gym etiquette, how to use each exercise space and where to go for help. We are fully staffed and operational with enough equipment to accommodate everyone. Why is it important to prep for the New Year’s rush? DL: Many of our New Year’s prep activities also benefit the existing members. That’s a common question new members will have - and since housekeepers are everywhere and accessible, they often get asked questions. In addition, we train housekeepers on where equipment is located. Consistency in staff behavior and company systems helps new gym-goers feel comfortable, and ensures they use the gym regularly. In addition, we make sure new staff are fully trained and immersed in the Gainesville Health and Fitness brand and culture, to ensure they can deliver the promised experience. We also add one more employee to each shift at the front desk, kids club and on the exercise floor. We complete the training and onboarding process in November for all front-line staff. We hire many college students for front-line positions and they tend to go home for the month of December, making them unavailable for interviews. Finally, we deep clean all facilities in December.įrom a team perspective, how do you prepare for the New Year’s rush? DL: We begin the hiring process in October for January shifts. We fully stock supplies as well, such as membership enrollment materials, toilet paper and gym wipes. Our year-round maintenance crew does a final check at the beginning of December to have time to replace machines, parts or fix any building and parking lot issues. Operationally, we prepare by making sure equipment is working and extra parts are in inventory. ![]() ![]() Operationally, how is GHF preparing for the New Year’s rush? DL: While we embrace the New Year holiday, we also know the influx of new gym-goers requires us to plan ahead or succumb to the chaos. ![]() It’s a chance for a “do over.” And our mission, vision, core purpose and brand promise are all about helping the newbie make fitness a permanent part of their lives to reach their full potential and live life without limits. The holiday gives members hope that they can be healthy, organized or less stressed. Some say it’s meaningless for consumers to have resolutions since nobody sticks to them, while others say gyms take advantage of the holiday by getting people to enroll - and hope they don’t come back. How does GHF view the New Year’s rush? DL: Skeptics of New Year’s resolutions present an unflattering view of the holiday and its hoopla. This month we spoke with Debbie Lee, chief marketing officer of Gainesville Health and Fitness, about preparing for the New Year’s rush.
